Promotion and Tenure

Promotion and tenure are important milestones for academics. They provide job security and allow them to focus on long-term research and teaching goals.

  • Academic Freedom: Tenured faculty can explore controversial topics, challenge prevailing ideas, and engage in critical inquiry without fear of reprisal.
  • Recognition: Promotion and tenure recognize a faculty member’s dedication, expertise, and impact on their field.
  • Career Advancement: Promotion opens doors to leadership roles, grants, and other opportunities.
  • Institutional Investment:
Promotion
  • Promotion refers to advancing a faculty member’s rank within the university. It recognizes their accomplishments and contributions in research, teaching, and service.
  • The criteria for promotion vary by institution but often include factors like scholarly publications, teaching effectiveness, and service to the university community.
  • At Georgia Tech, specific guidelines and resources support faculty as they prepare for promotion reviews. These resources include CV templates, guidance on showcasing student success activities, and instructions for external review.
Tenure
  • Tenure is a more permanent status granted to faculty members after a probationary period (usually several years). It provides job security and academic freedom.
  • Tenure is awarded to faculty members demonstrating research, teaching, and service excellence. The decision is based on rigorous evaluation by peers and administrators.
  • Georgia Tech’s tenure guidelines emphasize similar criteria as promotion, but tenure decisions are made separately. A faculty member may be promoted without receiving tenure.
COVID-19 Impact
  • Due to the pandemic, candidates must submit a COVID-19 Impact Statement for promotion and tenure. This statement can be up to 2 pages long or as short as one sentence, indicating no impacts.
  • The impact statements are included in the additional documents section in PROMOTE, where they are not released to external reviewers.
