Tuition Waiver vs. Tuition Remission

  • Sometimes, the term “tuition waiver” refers to a situation where the student’s tuition is covered by other sources (not paid by the student). This is called “tuition remission.”
  • At other times, “tuition waiver” indicates that Georgia Tech will never receive tuition from any source for the student, and the university must find internal funds to cover those costs.
  • The Institute provides these tuition waivers for graduate students working as research assistants (GRAs) or teaching assistants (GTAs).

Primary Points of Contact

Tuition Remission
  • For most scenarios falling under the first definition (such as fellowships, state-allocated waivers, and non-resident tuition waivers), the primary point of contact is Corey McAllister in the Office of Graduate Studies.
  • If tuition limitations or waiver requirements exist on philanthropic gifts received by the Georgia Tech Foundation, you can also contact Corey McAllister.
Tuition Waivers
  • For situations related to sponsored research projects awarded through the Georgia Tech Research Corporation, the primary point of contact is Gail Spatt in the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research.

Tuition Waivers for Externally Sponsored Programs

Please refer to the Institute Policy for detailed information on tuition waivers for graduate students. The following essential points only address tuition waivers for externally sponsored programs.

  • If a government or domestic non-profit sponsor includes a policy limiting or prohibiting tuition in its Request for Application (RFA) or other publicly available materials, the OSP Contracting Officer validates the limit documented in the RFP or website.
  • If an industry or international sponsor has policies limiting or prohibiting tuition, you may route the request through the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research.
  • If the RFP does not limit or prohibit tuition payment by the sponsor, the process depends on whether the sponsor is willing to pay tuition.
  • The EVPR approves exceptions to charging tuition remission to GTF and sponsored accounts. Simultaneously, the Bursar’s Office applies or removes tuition waivers, including pro-rating when approved.
